92-Year-Old Man is Injured at Long Island Railroad Station

Posted on Jun 25, 2011

Ben Goldman, age 92, was injured at the Great Neck Long Island Railroad (LIRR) train station on Sunday June 5, 2011. Reports indicate that Mr. Goldman fell into the gap between the eastbound LIRR train and the Great Neck train platform as he was exiting the train. The train was not moving at the time of Mr. Goldman's fall.

The gap was reportedly large enough that Mr. Goldman's body fell into the gap up until his hips.

Emergency responders were called. They released Mr. Goldman and took him to North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset where he is being treated.

This accident is similar to one that occurred in 2006, when a teenager fell into the gap between a LIRR train and the Woodside platform. The victim was killed in that accident, and the LIRR pledged to make improvements at its stations to prevent future injuries and fatalities. So far, it has done so at approximately 100 stations and has about 24 stations left to do.

In 2010, the LIRR reported 62 gap fall incidents.

We extend our best wishes to Ben Goldman for a full and fast recovery after suffering New York train accident injuries in the station gap fall.
