S. 608 would do away with the right to enforce maritime liens against fishing permits. This would be devastating to the many seriously injured fishermen, and the families of those killed in the world's most dangerous industry. The Admiralty section of the AAJ urges congress to include provisions requiring such permit holders to maintain reasonable liability insurance coverage on their vessels. Unlike industries covered by the LHWCA, there is no statue that requires fishing boat operators to carry insurance to cover their employees medical costs when injured, or to provide a living emolument while they are recuperating from injuries and illnesses occurring at the workplace.
We ask that all fisherman contact their representatives and urge them not to pass S. 608.
