Boats Collide Off Virginia Coast Leaving One Dead

Posted on Jul 01, 2011

Two boats collided off Pier 11 at the Naval Station Norfolk on Tuesday June 7, 2011. According to the U.S. Coast Guard a 15-foot recreational boat collided with a 42-foot crab boat named "Just One More." The collision allegedly caused the recreational boat to capsize, and one man was trapped underneath it.

A fisherman from "Just One More" jumped into the water to aid the two recreational boaters who have been identified as 74-year-old Cladon Mervin Johnson and 67-year-old Raymond Burgess. Reports indicate that Mr. Johnson was pulled on to the fishing vessel and the crew attempted CPR while waiting for emergency responders. Despite their efforts Mr. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene of this maritime accident. Mr. Burgess was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

While the investigation into this fatal maritime collision is still ongoing, early reports from the Virginia Marine Resources Commission indicate that the commercial fishing vessel may have been experiencing mechanical problems and that it is possible that no one was at the helm at the time of the collision. The Virginia Marine Police are continuing their investigation into the cause of the crash.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Cladon Johnson, and we extend our condolences and our best wishes to his shipmate Raymond Burgess following this Virginia maritime accident.
