Coast Guard Drops Medicine at Sea for Injured Maritime Worker

Posted on Sep 14, 2011

A Coast Guard airdrop, rather than an airlift, may have significantly helped an injured maritime worker last month. On Friday, August 5, 2011, the Coast Guard coordinated an airdrop of medication to a worker who had been injured several days before.

Reports indicate that a crewmember aboard the 621 foot Turkish freighter Feyza fell and hurt his leg while the freighter was at sea. The ship notified Coast Guard Sector New York, and a Coast Guard flight surgeon recommended that the crewmember receive prescription medication.

Accordingly, a Coast Guard HU-25 Falcon jet departed Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod and coordinated an airdrop to the vessel that was located 440 miles east of Cape Cod. Dropping medication at sea takes great coordination so that the medication makes it on to the vessel without hurting anyone on board.

The Coast Guard reports that the medication drop for this injured maritime worker was a success. We wish the injured worker a full and complete recovery following his maritime accident, and we applaud the Coast Guard and Feyza crew for working together to get this injured maritime worker the medication that he needed to improve his chances of recovering from his leg injury.
