Coast Guard Releases Philadelphia Duck Boat Accident Audio Tapes

Posted on Aug 05, 2010

On July 7, 2010, thirty-five tourists and two crew members were thrown into the Delaware River when the Philadelphia duck boat they were riding was struck by a tug boat. Two Hungarian students were killed in that accident.

Recently, the United States Coast Guard released audio tapes that shed more light on what caused the accident. A tug boat named Freedom called in the accident and assisted in the rescue. The Caribbean Sea, the tug boat that struck the duck boat, was accompanying a barge in the Delaware that day and was unable to assist the passengers in the water, according to the audio tapes.

The audio tapes also reveal the skipper of the Caribbean Sea telling the Coast Guard, “We are the ones that, I guess, capsized the duck boat.” The skipper of the tug boat has refused to meet with investigators regarding this accident, citing his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination.

As the investigation into this fatal boat accident continues, the skipper may face civil lawsuits and criminal charges. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is continuing its investigation so that future accidents can be prevented.

We extend our condolences to the families, friends, and classmates of those lost in this fatal Philadelphia duck boat accident.
