Construction Trench Accident Kills New Jersey Man

Posted on Jun 01, 2011

A New Jersey construction accident recently took the life of a 24-year-old man in Knowlton Township. On Wednesday, May 11, 2011, Kenneth Stafford was working on a trench outside his home in the 100 block of Vail Road. The trench was being dug for residential sewer work.

Around 3 p.m., the trench walls collapsed and Mr. Stafford became trapped under 5 feet of dirt. Knowlton Fire & Rescue Co., Knowlton Township Mayor Frank Van Horn, New Jersey State Police, Knowlton Township Volunteer Fire Department, Blairstown Police Department, Blairstown Hose Company No. 1, Blairstown Ambulance Corps. and Portland Fire Company all responded to the accident. It took rescuers about 20 - 25 minutes to dig Mr. Stafford out of the 6 - 8 foot trench.

According to Mayor Van Horn, about a dozen responders worked directly on getting Mr. Stafford out of the trench while two dozen other workers worked in supportive roles.

A witness to the accident said that Kenneth Stafford had a visible skull fracture when he was uncovered. He was rushed to the Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Kenneth Stafford following this tragic New Jersey construction accident.
