Deutsche Bank Fire Acquittal

CONSTRUCTION WORKERS FOUND NOT GUILTY IN DEUTSCHE BANK FIRE

A jury acquitted two of the construction supervisors charged with manslaughter in the Deutsche Bank fire trial. Both Jeffrey Melofchik, a safety supervisor for Bovis Lend Lease, a principal contractor involved in demolition of the structure damaged during the 9/11 attack, and Salvatore DePaola, an abatement supervisor for John Galt Corp. at the site, were acquitted of charges that included manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide. A fire during asbestos abatement work as part of the demolition of the damaged building in 2007 killed two New York City firefighters, in part because a standpipe had been removed which could have been used to deliver water to the site of the fire. Another Galt employee, Mitchell Alvo, still is awaiting a verdict by the trial judge in State Supreme Court in Manhattan. The defense argued that these men were made scapegoats for lax safety inspections and oversight, and that the fire was fueled by improper ventilation, otherwise, the firemen would not have been caught by the backdraft.

This event highlights how dangerous construction work is, and the risks these hard-working men take everyday
