September 23 was not only the first full day of fall, but also National Fall Prevention Awareness Day. The purpose of the day was to increase awareness and encourage the prevention of falls, particularly among older adults. Many states, including New Jersey, also declare state fall prevention awareness days around the beginning of autumn.
While many types of accidental deaths, such as motor vehicle deaths, are decreasing, the number of fatal falls is increasing in the United States. Those who survive slip and fall accidents are often left in significant pain and potentially disabled.
The government estimates that one-third of seniors over the age of 65 fall each year, and one-half of seniors over the age of 80 fall each year.
Different organizations hold different activities to promote fall prevention awareness. Balance and vision screenings may be provided; occupational therapy and physical therapy facilities may hold open houses; and hardware stores could hold demonstrations for products that make slipping and falling less likely.
Older Americans have an increased risk of suffering a serious injury when they fall, but slip and fall accidents can happen to anyone at any time. People who are involved in slip and fall accidents are encouraged to seek prompt medical attention for their injuries.
