Five People Injured in NJ Transit Escalator Accident

Posted on Dec 06, 2010

On Sunday, November 21, 2010, New Jersey Transit’s Secaucus Junction was packed with Jets fans returning from the Sunday afternoon football game at the new Meadowlands Stadium.  At approximately 5:15 p.m. an escalator heading from the train platform to the station’s mezzanine level suddenly stopped with many Jets fans on it.

A spokesman for NJ Transit says that the escalator stopped and may have reversed direction because of the weight from all of the people on it.

Five people were injured when the escalator stopped.  Three of the people who were injured were taken to Meadowlands Hospital for treatment.  The other two people who were injured were taken to Jersey Medical Center.  The names of the injured have not yet been released.  NJ Transit reports that their conditions are not life threatening but offers no other update on the seriousness of their medical conditions.

It is currently unclear why the escalator stopped.  NJ Transit officials are investigating whether it was an escalator malfunction or whether someone hit the emergency stop button.  All 31 escalators at the station have been shut down until they can be inspected and tested by certified technicians.

We extend our best wishes for a quick and complete recovery to everyone injured in this New Jersey railroad station accident.
