New York City’s Public Advocate Bill de Blasio has a new website dedicated to providing important information to New York City tenants, housing activists and the public. The website is called NYC’s Worst Landlords Watchlist. Its stated purpose is to “identify, track, and hold accountable New York City’s most irresponsible landlords.”
The website currently lists about 150 landlords who maintain dwellings that are dangerous to live in. Some of the stated problems include extensive mold in apartment buildings, blocked fire escapes, rat infestations, dirty public areas and other unhealthy and potentially dangerous living conditions.
Officials of the city hope that being included on the list will encourage landlords to fix up their properties and provide safe living arrangements for their tenants. Landlords are required by law to fix violations of the building code. However, some property owners fail to make the necessary repairs until the city forces the issue or a tenant is hurt and files a premises liability lawsuit.
New York tenants may use this website both to find out more about their own landlords and to file reports of violations with the Public Advocate’s Office.
