Lifeboat Accidents Continue to Kill and Maim Seafarers

Supposed to preserve life in case of a maritime accident, manned lifeboats during training drills are one of the deadliest causes of injuries in the commercial maritime industry. SOLAS regulations requiring ‘on load release’ mechanism to permit release of lifeboats from life boat falls have proven to be unreliable, because of poor manufacturing, training, maintenance and design.

In September 2010, a lifeboat aboard the M/T BRITISH CORMORANT dropped with 9 men aboard. Nine crew members from the tanker had to be rescued after three were injured and six others were thrown into the water when the boat capsized. Earlier this year our office settled the cases of two seafarers who were members of the crew of the Royal Caribbean luxury cruise ship EMPRESS OF THE SEAS who were in a lifeboat manufactured by Umoe Schat-Harding. Evidence revealed both manufacturing and design defects as well as maintenance failures.
