On Monday morning May 23, 2011, around 6:30 a.m. Sean Strakele dove into the water to fish for lobsters. Mr. Strakele is reported to be an experienced diver and was working off the coast of Provincetown, Massachusetts aboard the lobster fishing vessel Chase. He had one air tank with him when he descended into the waters off Race Point Beach in Provincetown. According to the Provincetown Pier Manager, the water depth in Hatches Harbor off of Race Point Beach is about 35 feet but drops quickly.
An hour later, Mr. Strakele had not resurfaced and crewmembers aboard Chase alerted the Coast Guard. In the day after the call, rescuers including members of the Coast Guard, police and volunteers searched 590 square miles based on the tidal ranges, currents and drifts. The Coast Guard used a jet plane, helicopter and several boats in their search efforts.
The search continued for Mr. Strakele through the night on May 23 and through the day on May 24. The Coast Guard officially called of the search at 5:07 p.m. on May 24. Mr. Strakele was 37-years-old and was from Eastham, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. We extend our best wishes to the Strakele family and friends in the difficult time following this Massachusetts fishing accident.
