Lobsterman’s Life Likely Saved by Quick Thinking Crewmates

Posted on Aug 22, 2011

Last month an 18-year-old commercial fisherman was involved in a serious maritime accident off the coast of Martha's Vineyard. The accident happened on Wednesday, July 27. At approximately 11:30 a.m. the Helen Irene, a Fairhaven, MA based fishing vessel, contacted the Coast Guard for help.

The Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England received the call and was informed that a crewman's leg had become entangled in a fishing line and that the fisherman had been pulled overboard as a result. The crewman spent about two minutes underwater before his crewmates aboard the Helene Irene could recover him.

The injured crewman was reportedly unresponsive when he was brought back to the surface of the water. Crewmembers of the Helen Irene performed CPR and revived the young fisherman. Then, a 25 foot boat from Coast Guard Station Woods Hole arrived and transported the man back to the station at Woods Hole where paramedics met him and rushed him to Falmouth Hospital.

According to the Coast Guard, having a crewmember that knew CPR saved this fisherman's life. The lobsterman's condition and identity have not yet been released to the media.

We extend our best wishes for a fast and complete recovery to the injured fisherman following this commercial fishing accident.
