MOST DANGEROUS OCCUPATIONS

Posted on Oct 21, 2010

Anyone who read Sebastian Junger’s nonfiction book, The Perfect Storm or saw the movie of the same name starring George Clooney is aware that fishing is a dangerous occupation. The Perfect Storm told about the convergence of three weather systems in the Atlantic off the coast of North America in October 1991 which produced the storm of the century and claimed the lives of the six crew members of the fishing vessel Andrea Gail. Recently, the U.S. Dept. of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics published its preliminary study tracking fatal occupational injuries in 2009. At the very top of the list is commercial fishing, by far the most dangerous occupation in America, with 200 fatal injuries per 100,000 workers.http://www.bls.gov/bls/naics.htm. No other industry comes close. The rate of fatal work injuries for all U.S. workers is only 3.3 per 100,000 employees. A “perfect storm” is not required to trigger a fatal accident in the fishing industry. . Ordinary conditions on the fishing vessel will do: small boats, inadequate communication systems, rapidly changing weather conditions, dangerous equipment, much of it poorly maintained, all combine to create hazardous conditions for the fishermen. Hofmann & Schweitzer, maritime lawyers in New York and New Jersey, have provided expert legal assistance over the span of many years to injured fishermen or to the families of deceased fishermen.
