New York City firefighter of Ladder 2 and Engine 65 acted quickly to save an injured construction worker on February 10, 2011. The injured payload operator was working on the construction of a Long Island Rail Road tunnel to Grand Central Terminal, as part of the MTA’s East Side Access Project, when he was hurt.
According to reports, the worker whose name has not yet been released, was driving a payloader about 150 feet underground when he was hit from behind. The collision caused him to fly 15 feet to the ground.
When the call for help came, the injured worker was unable to move, his left shoulder was hurt and his arm was swollen. We was lying in what authorities have called a well hole 50 feet below Madison Avenue and East 48th Street. His coworkers had carried him part of the back way up to the surface. Firefighters report that he was conscious but that he was having trouble breathing. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center for treatment.
In recent months, the Ladder 2 firefighters had trained for just this type of accident and received new equipment to help victims hurt in confined spaces or vertical shafts. According to firefighters, this training was very useful and may have made an important difference for this New York City construction worker.
We extend our best wishes for a complete and quick recovery to the injured worker following this New York City construction accident.
