OSHA Issues New Guidance for Maritime Shipyard Industry

Posted on May 13, 2011

On April 20, 2011, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) released a new injury prevention sheet for the shipyard industry. This injury prevention sheet was directed to both employers and workers and written to explain dangers related to rigging. Rigging typically employs ropes or cables to secure a part of a ship for lifting by crane or other machinery. Ships that are not properly rigged can result in substantial injuries or death.

Specifically, OSHA warned the shipyard industry what must be done to prevent rigging accidents and to avoid falls, electrical shocks and other traumatic injuries. This warning comes with descriptions of rigging injuries, such as amputations and fatalities and the conditions that led to those serious consequences.

The information contained in this new OSHA training is written in plain English and includes posters that can be posted in workplaces so that everyone knows about the risks and about how to minimize the risks.

If you have been hurt, or a loved one has been killed in a shipyard rigging accident, then it is important to notify OSHA. You might also benefit from a consultation with an experienced New York maritime accident lawyer to learn more about your legal rights and potential recovery.
