OSHA Releases Report Related to Fatal Construction Worker Fall

Posted on Dec 17, 2010

On May 27, 2010, employees of Roth Metal Works were installing steel beams on a Brooklyn construction site.  When one of the workers was attempting to connect a steel beam to build a balcony, he fell 50 feet to his death.

Recently, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) completed its investigation into this construction worker’s fatal fall and issued one willful citation and four serious citations against Roth Metal Works.  Specifically, OSHA cited the company for failing to stabilize the steel beams, failing to provide the worker with adequate fall protection, using a scaffold that lacked cross bracing, and for not creating a safe means of access under the supervision of a competent person.

The company faces more than $45,000 in fines related to these significant citations.

OSHA Offers Advice to All Construction Employers

While the harm done by these violations cannot be undone, OSHA suggests that employers and employees should work together on injury and illness prevention problems to prevent similar injuries and hazardous conditions from occurring in the future.

We extend our condolences to the family and friends of the steel worker who was killed in this workplace accident last spring.
