Scallop Fisherman Hurt off the Coast of New Jersey

Posted on Aug 04, 2010

Shortly after 7:45 p.m. on Saturday July 24, 2010, the Coast Guard received a call from the Eileen Marie, a commercial fishing vessel off the coast of Cape May, New Jersey. The crew member contacting the Coast Guard reported that a sixty-one-year-old fisherman had been struck by a heavy scallop dredge. The crew member reported that the injured scallop fisherman was barely responsive. It is not known how many people were on board the vessel at the time of the accident, but no other injuries were reported.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Jonathan Lindberg reported that the fisherman, whose name has not been released, was semiconscious when a helicopter from Air Station Atlantic City came to medevac the fisherman off the vessel. The fisherman was taken to Atlanticare Regional Medical Center, City Campus, in Atlantic City for treatment. No word on his condition has been reported.

This commercial fishing accident happened about fifty miles off the coast. The Eileen Marie is an eighty-eight-foot scallop-fishing vessel. Her home port is New Bedford, Massachusetts.

We extend our best wishes for a speedy recovery to the commercial fisherman who was injured in this New Jersey scallop dredge accident.
