Smoke Detectors Incorrectly Placed in Building Where Fire Killed a Pre

Posted on Jul 26, 2010

On Tuesday July 13, a fire ripped through a building in the Springfield Gardens section of Queens. The fire is believed to have started around 4:00 a.m. that day. More than sixty firefighters responded to the blaze, which was reported to be under control at 5:12 a.m.

It was too late, however, for a pregnant woman in her mid twenties and her two-year-old son. Linda Anderson and her son Ayden Hayes were found together in the living room. The child was taken to Queens General Hospital with significant smoke inhalation and burns, but he could not be revived and he was declared dead. His mother was declared dead at the scene of the fire.

Police report that the building did have working smoke detectors, but they were not properly placed and they were too low on the walls, so they did not go off when the fire started.

Officials from the Police and Fire Departments are working jointly on the continued investigation of this fatal Queens fire.
