The Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act Becomes Law

Posted on Aug 09, 2010

Late last month, President Obama signed the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2010 into law. The new law is meant to combat crime on cruise ships and to protect crew members and passengers.

The new law contains many provisions. Some of these, such as requiring peepholes on cabin doors and railings of a certain height on decks, are meant to prevent crimes and accidents from occurring. Other provisions, such as the requirement of rape kits on cruise ships and of the requirement that crimes be reported to the FBI, are meant to facilitate the investigation of crimes. The new law will also require cruise ship personnel to be trained on crime prevention and investigation.

The law applies to cruise ships with a capacity for 250 passengers or more that embark or disembark from the United States. Cruise ships found to be in violation of the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2010 may be banned from United States ports.

The cruise industry has expressed public support for the law. Survivors of those who have been killed on cruise ships and those who have suffered injuries also support the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2010.
