Train and Tractor Trailer Collide in New Jersey

Posted on Feb 06, 2011

A Pennsylvania tractor trailer driver was hurt in a New Jersey train accident on Monday, January 17, 2011.  This New Jersey train crash occurred shortly after 1:30 p.m. in Middlesex.

Authorities report that the truck was travelling southbound on Cedar Avenue when it was hit by a train that was travelling westbound on the Norfolk southern tracks.  The train collided with the cab of the tractor trailer, and the truck was pushed into a guide pole.

The truck driver was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital by emergency helicopter.  He is reported to have serious head injuries.  The driver’s identity has not yet been released by the authorities.  He was driving a truck that is owned by Mellinger Transportation Corporation and was carrying plastic molds.

The truck driver was not the only person injured in this crash.  Thomas Griffin, a Middlesex Borough police officer, reportedly suffered an asthma attack from the fire extinguisher fumes after the fire extinguisher was used on the truck.  He was taken to Somerset Medical Center for treatment.
Nobody onboard the train was reported to be injured.

We extend our best wishes to the truck driver and to Officer Griffin for a quick and complete recovery following this New Jersey train crash.
