Two Commercial Fishermen Injured in an Explosion

Posted on Jul 17, 2011

Two commercial fishermen had to be medically evacuated by the Coast Guard on Wednesday, June 22, 2011. The fishermen, who have been identified as Alvin Floyd and John Hodges, allegedly needed to be rescued from St. Catherine's Island, Georgia after an explosion on their commercial fishing vessel. The reported explosion on the 23 foot fishing boat apparently sent the two men into the water, and a Good Samaritan was able to get the men onto St. Catherine's Island until help could arrive.

The Coast Guard was notified shortly before 8:30 a.m. Two Coast Guard helicopters arrived on scene soon after 9:45 a.m. and took both victims to Savannah Memorial Hospital. Friends of Mr. Floyd have told the media that Mr. Floyd suffered a broken leg and burns on his arms and face. Mr. Hodges reportedly suffered similar burns, broken ankles, fractured legs, fractured vertebrae and fractured ribs.

The cause of the explosion is currently unknown. The Good Samaritan who rescued Mr. Floyd and Mr. Hodges reports that the vessel sank approximately 1,000 feet from the Georgia Coast.

We extend our best wishes for a full and fast recovery to Alvin Floyd and John Hodges following this commercial fishing accident.
