Two Workers Dead After New York City Construction Accident

Posted on Feb 24, 2011

A New York construction accident took the lives of two iron workers on Tuesday February 8, 2011.  The workers have been identified as 49-year-old Brett McEnroe and 51-year-old Roy Powell.

The accident happened when the men fell five stories from a landing on an Upper West Side construction site where a community center is being built for the Redeemer Presbyterian Church.  Emergency officials rushed to the scene after the 10:30 a.m. accident, and both men were taken to St. Luke’s Hospital – one reportedly in serious condition and the other in critical condition.  They both died shortly after 11 a.m.

OSHA and New York City police are investigating this fatal construction accident. All potential causes are being considered including weather conditions and whether appropriate safety measures were in place.  It was very windy at the time of the accident which may have been a contributing factor.  Additionally, the Department of Buildings Commissioner Robert LiMandri is quoted by CBS news as saying that there is “no evidence there were safety measures in place.”

Several safety complaints had been lodged against this construction site prior to the fatalities including one just days before Mr. McEnroe and Mr. Powell lost their lives.

We extend our sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Brett McEnroe and Roy Powell following this tragic construction accident.
