U.S. COAST GUARD PUBLICATION OUTLINES THE EXCEPTIONAL DANGER OF THE FISHING INDUSTRY

In the Winter 2011 Coast Guard Publication "Proceedings - Journal of Safety and Security at Sea", the government outlines the extreme hazards faced by the commercial fishermen we represent. The most astounding statistic was that Fishing is now the country’s most dangerous occupation, more dangerous than logging, roofing, iron and steel work and aircraft piloting.

Even more scary is the fact that the Northeast Fisheries are now the "most dangerous catch". On a percentage basis, there are more fatalities, injuries and sinkings off the Northeast Coast than even in the Alaskan - Bering Sea King Crab fisheries.

The statistics reveal that over the past ten years, on average 56 fishermen lose their lives each year to the sea, an average of 200 workers per 100,000.

Falls overboard are the second highest cause of fatalities, only slightly behind vessel sinkings as the highest cause.
