Was a Crisis Narrowly Averted on Metro North Train to Grand Central?

Posted on Feb 12, 2011

This winter has been far from easy for New York City commuters, and what happened on January 24, 2011 was no exception.  The 8:03 a.m.Metro North New Haven line commuter train stopped at its regularly scheduled stop at 125th Street in Harlem before continuing to its final destination of Grand Central Station.  However, when the train began to move after the 125th Street stop, the door did not close on one of the cars.

The door remained open for approximately two and a half minutes before closing in the Park Avenue tunnel.  It appears that conductors were unaware of the problem until after the train had pulled into Grand Central Station.

Many of the Metro North New Haven line trains are about a decade past when they were expected to retire.  This has led to some problems on the aging line.  However, Metro North has said that what happened on January 24 was an extremely unusual occurrence.

The video from this event has gone viral and it shows commuters to be calm and unnerved by the very obvious danger next to them.   Metro North is advising commuters that what happened could have been dangerous and that commuters should make every effort to notify a conductor if such a situation occurs in the future, in order to prevent a serious New York train accident.
