What Caused New Jersey and New York Train Delays on Monday, October 25

Posted on Nov 05, 2010

Monday, October 25, 2010 was a tough day for commuters who depend on trains to get in and out of New York City.  On Monday morning, shortly after 10:45 a.m., two train cars on the NJ Transit Midtown Direct train derailed.  The train was carrying 300 people at the time of its derailment, and it was travelling very slowly.  Nobody was physically hurt in this New York, New Jersey train derailment.

However, many people were inconvenienced.  The train tracks were damaged by the derailment and cranes were needed to rerail the train cars.  The first crane did not arrive on scene until about 3 p.m., and the second car did not arrive on scene until about 7 p.m. - about six hours after the train derailed.  Once the train cars were removed, the tracks had to be repaired.

It wasn’t only NJ Transit passengers who were affected by this accident, but Penn Station riders of the Long Island Railroad and Amtrak also suffered significant delays.  A total of nine tracks were affected by the derailment.

Full service was restored by about 5 a.m. Tuesday morning, in time for the Tuesday morning commute and nearly 17 hours after the initial train accident.
