Recently Mayor Dan Reiman of Carteret, New Jersey issued a warning to construction companies and residents. The warning came in the form of an advisory that provided an overview of residential construction code standards and warned that there will be zero tolerance for buildings found to be in violation of those standards.
The Borough Construction Department explains that homes and apartment buildings that violate fire and building codes put residents at risk of serious injuries and also endanger the lives and homes of neighbors.
Anyone with a concern about illegal occupancies or code violations should report them to the Borough Construction Department. An inspector from local Construction Code Enforcement, the Fire Prevention Bureau, or the Middlesex County Health Department will be sent out to investigate the allegations and notify the building owner about any code violations and potential New Jersey premises liability issues.
Mayor Reiman believes that this problem is common in urban areas of New Jersey and is not limited to Carteret. If you have a concern about the safety of your dwelling, it is important to have an inspector take a look at it and determine if it meets code and it is safe before you, or a guest, is injured.
